Directory Of Cell Phone Numbers Coming Starting early next year, you will be able to call 411 to get a cell phone number. Not all numbers will be listed, however, because wireless customers must give their permission to be added to the directory. Some consumer advocacy groups say the service encroaches on the privacy of wireless telephone users. Such concerns prompted Verizon Wireless, the number one wireless company, to keep its 40 million subscribers out of the directory. John Walls of the Cellular Telephone Industry Association says fears of privacy violation are overblown. People have to want their numbers listed, and there will be no published directory. The list will be managed by an outside vendor. Wireless carriers won't see the cell phone numbers of their rival's customers, says Walls. Further, cell phone users can use caller ID to screen unwanted calls. A spokesman for Sprint says the company views the new directory as a customer benefit. But those who don't want their numbers to be available don't have to be included. Do You Have A Question About Car Maintenance That You Want Answered? New Freedom Tower Could Be The World's Tallest Building...For Now Built on the site of the destroyed World Trade Center, the new Freedom Tower will rise to 1,776 feet. It could rank as the world's tallest structure. Some building experts are debating about whether the top of the tower qualifies as part of the building. The top is mostly vacant, filled with support cables and power-generating windmills. Any record for being the tallest building would be short-lived in any case. Buildings are planned in the United Arab Emirates and in South Korea that would be hundreds of feet taller than the Freedom Tower. From 1890 through 1974, New York City had the distinction of having the world's tallest buildings. Chicago took the title with the Sears Tower in 1974. The U.S. lost the tallest-building distinction in 1998 when the Petronas Towers were built in Kuala Lumpur. They were 33 feet higher than the Sears Tower. Earlier this year, Taipei grabbed the tallest building title. Its Taipei 101 building is 1,667 feet high, according to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Development in Chicago. The Friday after Thanksgiving has traditionally been spent with relatives and leftovers. Now, more Americans are spending it with the boss. In a trend that will probably continue, only two-thirds of companies surveyed by the Bureau of National Affairs last year said they give two days off for Turkey Day, the third straight year of declines and the lowest percentage since 1995, according to Business Week. Workers in retail and finance were the least likely to get the long weekend. Employees can take comfort in another trend, however. Some 16 percent of companies planned to give a Thanksgiving gift, up from just 8 percent in 1992.

The Tempting Season: Thanksgiving Through Christmas It's easy to visualize. There is turkey with dressing, potatoes with butter and sour cream, ham, candied sweet potatoes, casseroles, noodles, and scalloped oysters. Then come the cakes, cookies, candy, and pies. These are just some of the delicacies you will find on the endless tables of the holiday season. You could weigh six to 10 pounds more by New Year's Day. Science comes to the rescue. Doctors at the University of Washington say your body is good at matching energy intake to energy usage. In other words, if you pay attention to how hungry you are, you'll eat about as much food as your body needs. To avoid the temptation to eat it all, here's some good advice:
When it's cold outside, it takes longer for water to get to your tap or shower To shorten the wait and save a few bucks, check the pipes that go from the water heater to the tap. They may snake around through frigid crawl spaces where normal conduction steals the warmth. The loss of heat drives up your utility bills. To change the situation, insulate the water pipes with a prefabricated neoprene pipe wrap found in hardware stores and home centers. It comes in standard sizes for various pipe widths and has a peel-and-stick seam for a snug fit. |
Safety Group Wants Black Boxes In All Cars The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) wants black box recorders in cars to collect data that will help crash investigators. By September 2008, NHTSA wants recorders to collect up to 42 data elements About 15 percent of vehicles now on the road have the data recorders. Between 65 and 90 percent of 2004 vehicles, including all General Motors and Ford Motor Co. cars, have some sort of recording ability. The data collected from these systems, however, vary widely. And because there is no standard technology for accessing the boxes, crash-scene investigators have difficulty recovering information that could help them determine why an accident occurred. At Ford, the systems were originally designed for internal use by the company. Ford technicians could then check the information to make sure the vehicle performed correctly in the event of a crash. The NHTSA wants a federal mandate to standardize information and access. Boxes on cars collect far less information than those on commercial airlines and store much less of it. They don't record audio from inside the car, for example. Those in cars are a tiny module attached to electronic sensors embedded in the car. They store information about the vehicle's performance in the seconds before a crash. The American Civil Liberties Union says the owners of vehicles should be told that the recorders are in their cars, and they should be able to disable them. For Thanksgiving I would like to give thanks for my good health, for living in the San Francisco Bay area in this age, and for you, my wonderful clients. Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! Special thanks go out to all of our clients and friends who graciously referred our shop to their friends and neighbors last month! Our business is built based on the positive comments and referrals from people just like you. We just couldn't do it without you Anton McGready "Thanksgiving dinners take eighteen hours to prepare. They are consumed in twelve minutes. Halftimes take twelve minutes. This is not coincidence." —Erma Bombeck (1927–1996) |

Congratulations To Every month, we choose a very special client of the month. It's our way of acknowledging our great clients and saying thanks to those that support our business with referrals and repeat business. This month's Client of the Month is Mark & Judy Olivier and There was once a woman who loved to sit at home in the evening and sip wine. Red was her favorite and she preferred cabernet. One night she was just polishing off her third glass of wine when the doorbell rang. When she opened the door, she found a giant bug standing there. The bug proceeded to punch her in the face, turn on its heels and run off into the darkness. The woman was flabbergasted, and after she put some ice on her eye, she went to bed and fell asleep. The next night, as the woman was just draining her second glass of wine, her doorbell once again rang. Tentatively, she opened the door. She saw no one there and so she stepped out into the hall. As she did, the same giant bug approached her and slapped her so hard the woman fell down. The bug proceeded to call the woman a host of insulting names. The woman managed to crawl back into her apartment, washed the tears from her face and went to bed. The next night, just as the woman was finishing her first glass of wine, her doorbell rang again. This time the woman peeked out the peephole. She saw no one and so she tentatively opened the door and stepped out into the hall. She saw no one there either and so she turned to make her way back into her apartment. And as she did, she saw the giant bug out of the corner of her eye. The bug stuck its leg out so that the woman tripped and fell. When she was on the ground, the bug then proceeded to kick her with all 16 of its legs. Finally, after the giant bug had gone away, the woman crawled back into the house. Worried, the next day the woman went to her doctor and told him what had happened. "What can I do?" the woman asked the doctor. The doctor shook his head and said, "Not much, I'm afraid. There's just a nasty bug going around. |
