Tires Become Sidewalks

In my home town of New Rochelle, N.Y., city fathers have decided that trees and concrete sidewalks just don't get along. Tree roots kept heaving up the sidewalks and breaking them up.

Instead of a new repaving job, New Rochelle, N.Y., is experimenting with a new idea that might lead to a truce between people and nature. The sidewalks are being replaced with walks made of recycled tires, a product that is supposed to flex as trees grow and be able to withstand cycles of freezing and thawing.

The sidewalks are medium gray and resemble slate. They are not slippery and exceed Americans with Disabilities standards.

It takes one tire to make one foot of rubber sidewalk, which will help reuse some of the 225 million tires disposed of in the U.S. every year.

June 12th Is National Automotive Service Professional's Day

The day of the backyard mechanic has long since gone the way of the buggy whip. Modern cars and their electronics require service pros to keep them at their best.

The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), incorporated in 1972, established this special day to honor the commitment and dedication of automotive, truck, and collision technicians along with parts specialists and support professionals who serve the motoring public.

To become ASE certified, technicians take special courses and voluntary testing. Today there are more than 420,000 ASE-certified professionals who work in dealerships, independent shops, service stations, collision repair shops and other automotive facilities. If you meet an ASE pro on June 12th, congratulate him or her on being a real professional.

Today's Dads Are Present And Caring

A wonderful thing has happened to fathers since the day of the "man in the gray flannel suit." That was in the 1950s and 1960s when kids were expected to be quiet, not bother Dad, and stay out of the way. It wasn't true of all dads, but it was for many. Their work was their primary interest and family came in a distant second.

It took a couple of decades for things to change. By the 1980s, dads were beginning to take an interest in their sons and daughters. In the next decade, they were spending more time with them, but actually raising the family seemed to be the mother's job.

Around the time of the millennium, a transformation was taking place. The great thing about it was that fathers were becoming involved in all aspects of their children's lives. That included sharing the responsibility and pleasure of bringing up their sons and daughters.

It's a joy to watch today's dads as they interact with their children. They are involved in their kids' lives. They can change a diaper, take care of a 3-year-old, advise a middle-schooler, and give driving lessons. What's more, they are enjoying it.

A sincere Happy Father's Day to all of the dads who work with us. The world will be a better place because of you and the capable children you are raising.

Flag Day, June 14: Proudly She Waves

The sight of Old Glory waving in the breeze or being carried by an honor guard can stir the emotions of every American.

When we see our flag, we think of a country where people are judged by who they are rather than by their religion or their national origin. In this country we are free to determine our own futures according to our own plans and the efforts we are willing to put fourth.

More than ever, we think of our armed forces in Iraq and worldwide who are sacrificing months and years of their lives to defend us. They are often paying a dear price for their patriotism.

Flying the flag reminds us that we are proud of our country and proud to be Americans.

Charles Sumner eloquently expressed this spirit of patriotism when he wrote:

There is the National Flag. He must be cold, indeed, who can look upon its folds rippling in the breeze without feeling pride of country.

Prevent A Vacation Disaster

Having your wallet or passport stolen while on vacation can leave you stuck there and broke. Protect yourself against thieves by taking these steps:
Before You Leave:

  • Clear your wallet or purse of everything you won't need, such as deposit slips, credit card receipts, and your Social Security card. Write an inventory of everything you're taking. Make three copies of important travel documents like your passport and itinerary. Leave one copy with a friend.
  • Buy a fanny pack so you can stash credit cards and cash in it while taking side trips. Pickpockets can't get into it as easily as they could lift your wallet, and you will be able to stroll without carrying a purse.
  • Buy travelers checks. Don't plan to take any large amount of cash with you.
  • Arrange to have your mail held at the post office for the time when you will be gone. Just fill out a card at the post office to do it.
When You Get There:
  • Put your inventory and a copy of your travel documents and passport in the hotel safe. Keep the third copy yourself.

Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!

Special thanks go out to all of our clients and friends who graciously referred our shop to their friends and neighbors last month! Our business is built based on the positive comments and referrals from people just like you. We just couldn’t do it without you.

Give That Mower A New Lease On Life

If your lawn mower is a couple of years old and not running as it did when it was new, don't give up on it yet.

The average life span of a mower in the U.S. is just three years. If an owner takes care of a mower, however, it can last far longer.

Here's How To Start:

  • Change the spark plug. Plugs can erode, but replacing one will ensure a quick start.
  • Then get the blade sharpened. To remove it, always start by removing the spark plug. Usually the blade is held by only one bolt. Sharp blades make grass look nice and reduce engine strain.
  • Lubricate all the moving parts with a silicone spray. Spread a little oil on the wheels where they turn at the axle, and on any moving parts on the handle.
  • If the mower has carburetor problems, take it to a repair shop. For about $100, they will take it apart and clean it out so it will last you another season or three.

"My father didn’t tell me how to live; he lived and let me watch him do it."                   -Clarence Kelland

Take A Kid Fishing

Reeling in a kid's first catch can be the spark that ignites a lifetime interest in fishing.

To increase the likelihood of it happening, plan to go where fish are plentiful. A city park, a pay-per-catch pond, or a heavily stocked lake are good choices.

Remember that fish like to swim in sandbars, deep edges, weed beds, and sunken islands. They also like artificial structures such as docks, piers, and fallen trees.

A map of the lake will help you pick a spot where there are fish.

The Lighter Side Of Talking To God

A man walking on the beach was deep in prayer. Then God spoke to him saying that because he had always been faithful, one wish would be granted to him.

The man said he wanted a bridge to Hawaii so he could drive there. God said his materialistic wish was too difficult and it would take too many natural resources, and that he should think of another wish.

The man thought for a time, then said he wished that he could understand his wife, know her feelings, what she wants, and why she gives him the silent treatment and says nothing is wrong.

The Lord thought, then replied, "You want two lanes or four lanes on that bridge?"

  • Don't you know any normal boys?
